Enabling Active X Controls for Internet Explorer 7, 8

Jul 9th, 2010

image For most of TSM or Geovision based DVRs, the initial installation of any proprietary software usually occurs inside Internet Explorer.  Active X Controls and Plugins needs to be enabled in order for the background script to successfully execute the installation software.  The following how-to demonstrates the fastest, easiest, and safest method to enabling all the Active X Controls.

1. Launch Internet Explorer 7 or 8 (Internet Explorer 6 users can follow along, but not required). Click on Tools in the top right corner, and then select Internet Options.

2. Inside the Internet Options pop up window,

  1. Select Security
  2. Select Trusted Sites
  3. Uncheck “Enable Protected Mode” if it is checked.
  4. Finally, hit the “Sites” after completing steps 1-3 above.

3. After selecting Sites, in the blank below “Add this website to the zone:” type in the IP Address of the DVR or the Dynamic DNS Address of your DVR.  Make sure the checkbox “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone” is unchecked.  Afterwards, select Add to add your DVR to the trusted zone. Click on Close to exit this box.

The reason we add the DVR directly to the trusted zone ensures us that even if we lower the Active X zone security (i.e. Enabling all the Active X Controls), we will not be giving malicious websites any opportunities to install Malware on our systems.

4. After step 3, you should be brought back to the Internet Options dialog box. Select Custom Level.

5. In the Security Settings – Trusted Sites Zone pop up box, choose “Low” from the drop down list at the bottom and choose Reset.. Click on OK at the bottom when finished.

6. If any warning messages pop up, be sure to select Yes to confirm.

7. Click on OK and then OK to get out of the Internet Options set up pages.  Restart Internet Explorer 7 or 8 and all of the Active X controls and plugins will all be safely enabled.
