In this KB, we will go through the process of setting up our new standalone H.264 DVR for (1) Initial Setup, (2) Recording, (3) Playback / Search setup (4) Remote View / Remote Playback (5) Backup to Local PC and USB Flash drive. This guide uses the DVR8024 to demonstrate but the same steps will apply to the 8 and 16 channels as well.

Prerequisites: All the cameras must be plugged in for this exercise. If we have a USB mouse, then let’s make sure that is plugged in, otherwise, we may have to use the front panel buttons to control the operation.

1. Initial Setup

After we have inserted a 3.5” SATA Hard Disk Drive, 4 cameras, and 1 VGA monitor, we should see something like the following.

Notice the black bar in yellow outline at the top. This could mean that we do not have a hard disk drive plugged in or that our plugged in hard drive has not been initialized.

Since I know I just put in a new 1 TB HDD, I’m going to go to the initialize menu and make sure the hard drive is properly formatted in the DVR’s native format. Go to Setup (the gear icon) > Main Menu (the page icon).

We should be brought to the main landing screen. The following screen is an important gateway between this and the next couple of sections in this KB article.

Figure 1. The main landing screen.

The icon we want to go to is this icon, it’s Utility icon, labeled #9. Inside the Utility menu, we want to choose “HDD Initialization…”

In the following screen, be sure to the blank box next to (1) and click on Start to begin the HDD Initialization.

Choose “Yes” in the corresponding pop-up menu’. Note: This WILL remove all the data on the hard drive, including any previously recorded videos that may exist!

Once the HDD finishes initializing (should only take a few moments). we should notice a few changes, as outlined by the red arrows below. Close out of the menu by pressing on “Close” at the bottom right.

Now, after clicking on “Close” above, we should be back at the Utility screen. This time, choose “System Recovery.”

Choose “Yes” in the corresponding popup menu. Note: This WILL restore all the settings for this system back to factory defaults. i.e. the recording settings, network etc will be reset!

After we have chosen Yes, just click out of the menu and Unplug the power to the DVR. Plug in the power after 15 seconds and our device should be restored back to factory defaults. Continue to the next section for setting up the DVR for recording.

2. Recording

Once section 1 is complete, we will need to set up our DVR for either Motion detect or Around-the-Clock recording. Navigate back to the main menu and choose the Record Setup icon, labeled #1 in Figure 1 above.

In the Record Setup menu, double check to make sure when the HDD is full, it is set to automatically “Overwrite”. Afterwards, head over to the “Quality & Frame Rate Setup…”

In the Quality & Frame Rate Setup page, the default filter is set for “View Event.” In this view, we can customize the specific frame rate (FPS) response to an event (such as motion) for every single camera. If we select the “View Normal” filter, we can also select and choose the appropriate FPS response for each camera even if there is no motion (i.e. around-the-clock).

However, for this guide, we will focus on the easiest way to get the most optimized setting. In the figure below, either select “View Event” or “View Normal”, depending on whether we want to do motion detect recording or do around-the-clock recording. Doesn’t matter which one we pick, but I’m choosing the Event recording. Now, we should select a resolution we want to record at, choose a FPS and make sure that it doesn’t exceed the maximum amount allotted by the system. By default, for this 4-channel, it is set to 720×480 resolution at 15FPS.

We want to take note of 3 things.

If we change this value, it will propagate to all the channels.

The FPS will change respectively depending on the recording resolution. If we’re recording at 360 x 240 or 720 x 240, we will be able to obtain 30 FPS. If we’re recording at 720 x 480, then we will only be able to obtain is 15 FPS.

We want to click on the “Auto” button if we are seeing anything like 60/240 or 480/240. The first number is the number of frames being recorded and the second number is the total available. Always make sure the 1st number is equal or smaller than the second number.

Click on “OK” once we are satisfied with the resolution and the frames per second for each channel. Press “OK” again, to get out of Record Setup and return to the main landing screen.

In the main landing screen, please select the Event Setup icon (labeled #2) and then click on the “Motion Setup…” button. Make sure “Enable” is checked for every camera. If we have want to Mask out certain areas of the camera due to a constant roadway or moving tree, etc. This is the place we can mask it.

Once we are satisfied with the settings, let’s click “OK” to get out of it.

For the times when we have a single Geovision DVR set up for remote viewing, DMMultiview and Remote ViewLog installs and works like it should. However, when we have multiple DVRs (or we have one DVR but have upgraded the Main System’s software multiple times) we may end up with multiple copies of DMMultiview and Remote ViewLog scattered throughout our system. This can sometimes confuse the application launchers and cause an older version to load on our PC instead of loading a new version.

In this tutorial, we will go through the steps to fully remove all (or at least most) traces of Geovision’s DMMultiview or Remote ViewLog from our system. It is strongly recommended that we check the removal locations in the order posted in this guide, as the Geovision un-installer doesn’t always work when launched from some locations. Before we begin, make sure DMMultiView or Remote ViewLog applications are not running in the background.

Removing all significant traces of DMMultiView

1. Check the Start Menu, and look for DMMultiView, or MultiView. If there is a link such as “Uninstall DMMultiView,” then run it. If not, then proceed to next step.

2. Now, we can check the Add or Remove Programs (which can be found inside the Control Panel). If there is still an entry, run it. If there isn’t, then proceed to the next step.

3. We must browse to the following folders and delete any folder that contains the words vXXXX where “XXXX” is a 4-digit number. i.e. v6110, v7020, v8320, etc. We must check every folder listed below:

C:\Windows

C:\Program Files

C:\Windows\System32

4. Finally, we must remove the Web Active X folder, called GeoOCX. This folder should be located inside the C:\Windows directory.

If it’s not found there, it can also be found inside C:\Program Files\. Delete the folder if it’s there.

Now, all the past DMMultiViews should be removed.

Removing all significant traces of Remote ViewLog

1. Let’s begin by checking the Start Menu, and then looking for Remote ViewLog. If there is a link such as “Uninstall Remote ViewLog,” then run it. If it does not exist, just continue on to the next step.

2. Now, we can check the Add or Remove Programs (which can be found inside the Control Panel). If there is still an entry, run it. If there isn’t, then proceed to the next step.

3. We must delete the Remote Viewlog folder from the C:\ drive.

If it is not found in the C:\, it can be found inside the C:\Program Files\Geovision\Remote Viewlog

4. Finally, we must remove the Web Active X folder, called GeoOCX. This folder should be located in the C:\Windows directory.

If it’s not found there, it can also be found inside C:\Program Files\. Delete the folder if it’s there.

Now, all the past Remote Viewlogs should be removed.

1. Prerequisities
For Windows 7 users, please complete this KB first, and this KB second, before continuing to Step 2.
For Windows Vista users, please complete this KB first, and this KB second, before continuing to Step 2.
For Windows XP users, only complete this KB before continuing.

2. Let’s login to our DVR using either the internal IP address (if we’re on the same Local Area Network as the DVR) or the external IP address (if we’re off site).

3. Please make sure we have already enabled all the Active X controls for this Remote PC by following this KB, as outlined in Step 1. Once we are sure, let’s enter in our login information of our DVR to proceed.

4. Once all the Active X controls finish downloading in the browser, we will be brought to this screen. (Note: This may take a few moments to fully complete depending on the internet connection speed at the DVR’s source.)

5. From here on, there are two ways, (1) In Browser and (2) through a Remote Viewlog utility (standalone Geovision Remote Playback Software), to view more than 1 camera.

6. If we want to remotely playback videos in our browser, we want to expand the “Remote Play Back” option on the left.

Select Remote Play Back on the left, and wait for the Active X controls to finish installing on the right.

After the Video Log database loads and we should be able to select a camera on the right.

Select a desired time frame to play back the videos.

The previously recorded videos will automatically start playing back.

Steps 1-6 demonstrates how we could playback individual cameras from previously recorded videos straight in our browser.

For using standalone Geovision’s Remote ViewLog Video Playback Software

1. Similar to viewing live cameras directly through an application on our PC, we can also playback our cameras on our PCs through an application called Remote ViewLog. The following steps and accompanying flow chart will walk us through the procedure.

Select Remote ViewLog on the left.

Select the Monitor Resolution of the current PC. Only select a higher resolution if your monitor supports it!

Wait for the Active X to finish installing in the background.

When the Remote ViewLog – InstallShield Wizard pop up, do nothing, as it will disappear automatically.

Again wait for the Active X to finish installing in the background.

Once the Active X finishes, the word “Execute” will appear and we will be prompted with two options.

Select Remote Viewlog Service.

Enter in the proper login credentials as we inputted earlier.

2. Once we log in to the system, we will see something similar to the picture posted below. Unlike the DMMultiView interface, the Remote ViewLog interface looks just like as if we were standing in front of our DVR watching the DVR’s ViewLog.

Use this icon to change the screen division.

Use this drop down menu to change cameras.

This section shows the Month/Day view and lists the individual videos

This button allows us to convert the selected video clip(s) to the popular .avi format.

This section controls the speed of the playback, among other nifty controls.

Minimize/Exit.

3. Unlike Geovision’s DMMultiView software, the Remote ViewLog application does not automatically place a shortcut icon on our desktop. We need to manually create it. After we quit the current open Remote ViewLog application, let’s close all the browsers and launch the Start Menu. Go to All Programs > Remote ViewLog and we should see Remote ViewLog application inside. Simply right click on Remote ViewLog and choose Send to and then select Desktop (create shortcut).

4. Once complete, we will see the Remote ViewLog icon on our desktop. Next time, we want to view previously recorded videos, we can just double click on that icon on our desktop, enter in the credentials, and we will be connected to the cameras again.

Note: If this is NOT the first time enabling Remote View on this computer, please follow this KB to fully uninstall any old DMMultiview and Remote Viewlog files before continuing. If this IS the first time enabling DMMultiview, please continue to Step 1 below.

For In-Browser Remote Live Viewing

1. Prerequisites
For Windows 7 users, please complete this KB first, and this KB second, before continuing to Step 2.
For Windows Vista users, please complete this KB first, and this KB second, before continuing to Step 2.
For Windows XP users, only complete this KB before continuing.

2. Let’s launch Internet Explorer and try to access our DVR. For Local Area Network Remote viewing, simply enter the 192.168.0.x address or the 10.1.10.x address in the browser. For Remote (across the internet) viewing, we need to enter the external IP of the DVR. For this example, we will use the DVR in our demo room: http://208.57.226.46/

5. From here on, there are two ways, (1) In Browser and (2) through a DMMultiview (standalone Geovision Remote Viewing Software), to view more than 1 camera.

6. If we want to see the 2 Window view, we want to expand the “Live View” option on the left.

Select 2 Windows on the left

Press the Play button to start the view.

Select a camera from the drop down list.

The same goes for the standard video screen on the right.

7. If we want to see the Multi Windows view (Geovision 8.33+ only), we want to expand the “Live View” option on the left.

Select Multi Windows on the left

Select all the cameras we want to see.

The selected cameras from above will be queued at the bottom of the window.

Steps 1-7 demonstrates how we could view all of our cameras straight in our browser.

For using standalone Geovision’s DMMultiview Remote Live Viewing Software

1. There is also another way of viewing our cameras directly on our PC (not through the Internet Explorer) by using a Geovision remote viewing application called DMMultiview. The following Steps and accompanying flow chart will walk us through it.

Select DMMultiView on the left.

Select the Monitor Resolution of the current PC. Only select a higher resolution if your monitor supports it!

Wait for the Active X to finish installing in the background.

In the InstallShield Wizard pop up, select “Next” and “Next” until the box disappears.

Again wait for the Active X to finish installing in the background.

Once the Active X finishes, the word “Execute” will appear and shortly a MultiView Login screen will show.

Enter in the proper login credentials as we inputted earlier.

2. Once we log in to the system, we will see something similar to the picture posted below.

These sections allow us to change the current screen’s divisions from 4 cameras to 6 cameras, etc.

If we have a Microphone or Computer speaker set up locally and/or at the Remote DVR site, we can communicate with the Remote DVR or listen in on the Microphone attached from their location on our PC.

This button gives us the option to record the current Live Video steam on our PC. The default location the files are stored at are: C:\Program Files\DMMultiView\AviFiles

This button brings up the Tools palette, which allows us to configure the default screen resolution, screen displays, and change the default save location.

The Edit Hosts button gives us to connect to more than 1 DVR (or Host). Please see this KB for more information on adding/connecting to additional hosts.

Minimize/Exit.

3. The great part about using Geovision’s DMMultiView to view our cameras Live is that we have the convenience of double-clicking on a single application to see our live, remote videos. After we quit the current Geovision DMMultiView that is open on our screen, we will notice a DMMultiView icon on our desktop. If we double click on it, we will be prompted with the regular login screen. Enter in the credentials and we will be connected to the cameras again.

1. In order to begin, we need to first completely shut down any open Geovision applications. See below for a list of all possible Geovision applications that may be open. The most common applications are shown in bold. To kill these processes, just bring up the task manager and find the corresponding applications and “End Task” them in the Processes tab.

2. Open up the Device Manager, (can be found by right-clicking on “My Computer” icon and selecting “Manage”, and then selecting “Device Manager” on the left.

3. Open up the tab “DVR-Devices” and you should see from either (1) to (8) device drivers. In the following example, there is only 1 driver, since we only have (1) GV-1120, or GV-1240, or GV-1480 installed. If we have a GV-800, we should have seen 4 Video drivers and 4 Audio Drivers. GV-650? 2 of each. GV-600? 1 of each. Right click and choose “Uninstall” for each of those drivers. If the box asks to “Delete the driver software for this device.” then select it and click on OK to uninstall that particular driver. Note: If our system was stacking two cards together. we may see duplicates, such as two rows of “GV1480A/GV1240A/GV1248A/GV1120A/GV1008” drivers.

4. In addition to the drivers listed in the step above, if we have some kind of POS capture device installed or PTZ Controller set up, we should also check the section under Ports (COM & LPT) and look for Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port and right click and Uninstall those as well. Close the Device Manager when all the Geovision related drivers have been uninstalled.

5. Next, open up a Command Prompt (can be found by typing Start > Run > “cmd”) and type in the following commands in red, line by line. If any errors occur, please check if (1) Any and all open Geovision applications listed in Step 1 are closed, (2) we have Administrator level access to the system (3) the commands are typed correctly as shown. Note: If we encounter any messages such as Could not Find C:\XXXXXXXXXXXXX, that just means those set of drivers don’t exist on our system. In other words, we can ignore that error.

6. Then, next to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (or Uninstall a Program) and find either “Multicam Surveillance System”, “Geovision Digital Surveillance System” or “GVXXX”. Select either one of the possibilities and choose “Uninstall”. If we see any other GeoVision Codecs listed below, it is also safe to remove those as well.

7. Next, go to My Computer > C: Drive and find any folder that contains the name of your capture card i.e. “GV-XXX” or “GVXXX” or “Multicam”. Right-click on that folder and choose “Delete.” Confirm the deletion.

1. Launch Internet Explorer 7 or 8 (Internet Explorer 6 users can follow along, but not required). Click on Tools in the top right corner, and then select Internet Options.

2. Inside the Internet Options pop up window,

Select Security

Select Trusted Sites

Uncheck “Enable Protected Mode” if it is checked.

Finally, hit the “Sites” after completing steps 1-3 above.

3. After selecting Sites, in the blank below “Add this website to the zone:” type in the IP Address of the DVR or the Dynamic DNS Address of your DVR. Make sure the checkbox “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone” is unchecked. Afterwards, select Add to add your DVR to the trusted zone. Click on Close to exit this box.

The reason we add the DVR directly to the trusted zone ensures us that even if we lower the Active X zone security (i.e. Enabling all the Active X Controls), we will not be giving malicious websites any opportunities to install Malware on our systems.

4. After step 3, you should be brought back to the Internet Options dialog box. Select Custom Level.

5. In the Security Settings – Trusted Sites Zone pop up box, choose “Low” from the drop down list at the bottom and choose Reset.. Click on OK at the bottom when finished.

6. If any warning messages pop up, be sure to select Yes to confirm.

7. Click on OK and then OK to get out of the Internet Options set up pages. Restart Internet Explorer 7 or 8 and all of the Active X controls and plugins will all be safely enabled.

1. Go to Start > Control Panel. Inside Control Panel, click on “User Accounts and Family Safety” title on the right.

2. In the next page, select the title User Accounts on the top to continue.

3. In the User Accounts dialog, select the last option, Change User Account Control settings. If any “Continue” or “Cancel” dialog boxes come up, click on Continue to go forward.

4. In the new pop-up window, Drag the slider bar all the way down to the bottom. Choose OK when complete.

5. Now, restart the computer by going to Start > Right Arrow > Restart.

2. If you get any alert boxes asking you to Continue or Cancel, then choose Continue.

3. In the System Configuration window, select the Tools tab and scroll all the way to the bottom. Click on Disable UAC to highlight it. Afterwards, hit Launch.

4. A Command Prompt Window will open after hitting Launch, just close it when it does.

5. Restart your Computer by going to Start > Right Arrow > Restart.
